5 Easy Ways To Clean Your Microwave
How you clean your microwave also depends on how dirty it is! If there are some adamant stains then you may need to adopt a tougher approach. Luckily, we have identified the most effective ways to keep your microwave clean no matter what type of stains you encounter!
1. The Wet Paper Towel Method
This method of cleaning your microwave couldn’t be simpler! All you need to do is place a pile of wet paper towels into the microwave and turn it on for 4-5 minutes (ensure the microwavable plate has been removed first).
As the wet paper warms up it will produce steam which will penetrate and loosen any light stains. Once the steam has had sufficient time to bed in, you can pick up the towels and wipe away the grime! It couldn’t be easier!
2. The Fresh Lemon Method
Did you know that you can clean a microwave with Lemon? In fact, lemon is one of the great natural disinfectants and will ensure your microwave is smelling fresh and citrusy by the end.
- Fill your microwavable bowl with a cup of water
- Cut a lemon in half and squeeze the juice into the water being careful not to drop the pips inside
- Drop the lemon halves into the water and place them into the microwave
- Turn on your microwave for 5 minutes until the water has heated and steam fills the microwave
- Remove the bowl from the microwave using extra caution as it will be hot!
- Wipe the inside using paper towels or a sponge and don’t forget to wipe the microwavable plate at the same time!
3. The Baking Soda Method
Baking soda is extremely effective in breaking down tougher stains. If your appliance is particularly dirty or even burnt on the inside then this may be the best method for cleaning your microwave.
Start by mixing baking soda and warm water in a bowl until it becomes a thick paste. Apply the paste to the stained areas and leave for 5 minutes allowing it to break down the stuck-on food or debris. After 5 minutes you should be able to simply wipe away the stains with a kitchen towel or, if it needs a bit of extra scrubbing, use a sponge.
4. White Vinegar and Water
Much like lemon, white vinegar is also an effective natural cleaner making it the perfect product for cleaning the microwave.
- Fill a spray bottle with equal parts white vinegar and water. Give it a shake to ensure it’s all been mixed.
- Spray the mixture around the microwave, focusing on the toughest parts with the most amount of solution
- Turn on the microwave for 4-5 minutes to heat the solution and break down the stains
- Wipe the inside of the microwave with a kitchen towel or your sponge ensuring no traces of vinegar are left behind!
5. Kitchen Cleaning Spray
If you want to use a more traditional method then a high-quality kitchen spray will clean the microwave effectively. Remember to allow time for the spray to break down the stains and always wipe away any residue completely to avoid any fumes entering your food. We always recommend using cleaning sprays from reputable brands, choosing an eco-friendly, organic option if possible.
These sprays can also be used to clean the doors and the outside of the microwave. Apply a light spray and use your microfibre cloth to polish the glass and metalwork until clean and shiny!
Safety Tips
It’s important to remember that you are cleaning an electrical appliance so caution must be exercised at all times.
- Turn off and unplug the microwave before cleaning
- Never place metallic items inside the microwave and do not use cleaning supplies that contain metal
- Take caution when using water, only use small amounts and ensure it has all been wiped away before turning on the microwave
- Always ensure chemicals have been wiped away completely before heating any food
