How to Clean Very Dirty Toilets

If your toilets are extremely dirty, don’t panic. Here are some handy tips to help you:

  1. Bicarbonate of Soda and Vinegar: Pour three tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda into the bottom of your toilet. Add a cup of white vinegar and let it sit. Use a brush to scrub thoroughly. Repeat if there are stubborn limescale deposits.
  2. Vinegar Spray for the Edges: Fill a spray bottle with a mixture of white vinegar and hot water. Spray around the edges and wait a few minutes. Scrub with a sponge and rinse when done.
  3. Citric Acid for Stubborn Stains: For tougher stains, wear protective gloves as citric acid is corrosive. Mix three tablespoons of citric acid with half a litre of hot water and scrub the entire toilet. Guaranteed results.
  4. Bleach: With gloves on, use a sponge soaked in pure bleach to clean your toilet. Rinse thoroughly to eliminate odours.
  5. Coca-Cola Trick: Pour Coca-Cola into the toilet after removing the water. The acid in the soda helps clean. Leave it overnight, scrub the next day, and rinse thoroughly.

What is the Best Toilet Descaler?

Over time, limescale builds up at the bottom of toilets. The best descaler is white vinegar. It’s a natural product that’s highly effective for degreasing, cleaning dirt, and disinfecting. If the smell bothers you, add a few drops of essential oil or lemon juice to mask the odour.

For better results, boil the white vinegar before applying it to limescale. Leave it to soak overnight. The next day, scrub with a brush to remove the limescale and rinse thoroughly. This method works not only for standard and black toilets but also for bathtubs, sinks, and faucets. It’s very practical for thoroughly cleaning your bathroom.

How to Clean Under the Toilet Rim

You can start by applying white vinegar with a spray bottle. Always let the product sit for a while. If this isn’t sufficient, soak paper towels in white vinegar and place them between the walls and under the toilet rim. Cover as much area as possible and let it sit overnight. In the morning, dispose of the paper towels in the bin (do not flush them). Wipe the rim with a sponge if necessary.

Why is white vinegar so effective? Its natural acidity effectively tackles limescale. This is also why Coca-Cola works. However, white vinegar is a natural product and many prefer not to pour soda into their toilets. Leaving vinegar-soaked paper towels on the toilet rim allows time for the vinegar to penetrate the limescale effectively.

How to Clean Toilets with Hydrochloric Acid

A word of caution before using hydrochloric acid: it is a toxic chemical cleaner. Wear gloves, goggles, and a protective mask. Use this product only if other methods have failed. Hydrochloric acid is very effective against deeply embedded limescale.

Pour a capful of hydrochloric acid on the limescale deposits or at the bottom of the toilet and let it sit. Close the lid to avoid odours and wait a few hours. Then, scrub with a brush to remove the limescale. Flush and open the windows to ventilate your home.

Now that all the limescale and black staining in the toilet bowl is gone, maintain your toilets regularly to keep them clean. You can also create your own natural toilet deodorisers! Short on time for daily cleaning? Wecasa offers a home cleaning service that many appreciate.
