The best ways to clean UPVC window frames

The hinges and inside the UPVC frame

The inner part of the frame and the metal hinges is where the biggest amounts of grime, gunk and even rust can build up and therefore requires a bit more effort to keep clean.

Start by opening the window as wide as it can go to reveal the hinges and gain access to the inner frame. Next, use your vacuum cleaner to suck out all the dust, debris and pet hair that has accumulated since the last clean. If possible, use a nozzle with a soft dusting brush to avoid scratches on the metal parts of the frame.

In a bowl, make a hot soapy water solution and soak a clean cloth or rag. Use this to wipe inside the UPVC frame, making sure to apply the water to all the hard-to-reach places along the frame.

Clear Glass Window With Brown and White Wooden Frame

Tip: If you still find stubborn stains left on the inner frame after it’s dried out, spray your mould and mildew cleaning agent along the frame and use a toothbrush to scrub away the excess grime. It may require a little elbow-grease but it’ll be worth it to see it looking as good as new!

How to clean the outside UPVC frames ?

Whilst cleaning UPVC frames is easier than other materials, they can quickly become greasy and harbour germs, especially windows located around the kitchen area. Cleaning the outer part of the frame is similar to the process we outlined above.

Firstly, wipe away any dust or debris using a dry cloth to ensure it doesn’t get rubbed into the surface. Next, apply your soap and warm-water solution around the perimeter of the frame, wiping with soft cloths or a sponge as you go. This should easily remove any tough stains on the surface. Once it’s clean you can choose to let it air dry or use your paper towels to mop up any excess water.

Glass Panes

Firstly, we always advise cleaning your window panes on a dry, cloudy day when it’s not too hot. Cleaning glass in direct sunlight can cause ugly streaks to appear when using some cleaning agents.

If you have a good quality glass cleaner, this will be the most effective way to clean the windows. If not, then simply mix a small amount of washing liquid with warm-water and wipe over the surface of the glass. Use a cloth to wipe away the soap and bubbles, then buff and polish the glass using your microfiber cloth.

How to keep UPVC frames clean and white ?

UPVC window frames are highly resistant and last for years, even against the worst weather conditions. However, If they’re not cleaned often they can become worn and begin to lose their colour. Luckily, there is a trick to ensure your UPVC frames stay brighter and whiter for longer!

  1. Pour 1 cup of vinegar into your spray bottle along with 4 cups of hot water
  2. Spray the mixture around the UPVC frames and leave to soak in for approximately 10-15 minutes
  3. Wipe away with a paper-towel or a soft cloth and polish with your microfiber cloth.

Vinegar is a very effective, environmentally friendly natural cleaner, which will leave your UPVC window frames looking brighter, smelling fresher and chemical-free!

Mistakes to avoid when cleaning UPVC window frames

As durable and resistant as UPVC window frames can be, they can become damaged if not treated with the right items. Avoid using these products and chemicals to keep your UPVC frames in the best condition:

  • WD40
  • Scouring pads or other wire bristle cleaning pads
  • Nail varnish remover
  • Cream cleaners such as Cif as they are slightly abrasive
  • Products containing chlorine bleach
