Why is a Special Technique Required for Removing Gel Nail Polish?

First and foremost, it is important that you understand how semi-permanent varnish works. The gel nail polish is fixed by catalysing pigmented acrylic under a UV lamp which allows the gel product to harden. This is why the varnish holds much longer than a standard nail varnish (at least two weeks, but sometimes up to four or more).

However, this is also the reason why the removal is much more difficult to achieve. And yes, no need to think about it, a simple classic nail polish remover will not be enough to remove gel nail polish. There are a few things to know about gel nails – when it comes to removal at home or not, you will need specific materials and techniques.

How to Remove Gel Nail Polish Yourself?

While we do strongly recommend that you carry out your semi-permanent varnish removal with a professional to avoid nail breakage, we know that you may sometimes not have the time, money or patience for a salon appointment. So to prevent you from damaging your nails, we are going to give you some of our best tips to help you remove your gel nail polish thoroughly. These techniques work well for both gel nail polish and gel nail extensions.

Removal of Gel Nail Polish: Which Material to Use?

Here is the list of products you will need to remove your varnish:

  • A nail file
  • Acetone remover (or acetone)
  • A polishing block
  • Aluminum foil
  • Cuticle regrowth
  • Cotton

Removing Semi-Permanent Nail Polish: DIY Steps

There is a real process to follow to the letter if you don’t want to remove it without ending up with damaged nails. By following these steps you should have the ideal result:

  1. Use a nail file on your gel nails until the shiny coloured layer is gone. You just took off your top coat!
  2. Soak a cotton ball in acetone and place it on your nail. Secure with aluminium foil then leave for about fifteen minutes.
  3. Remove your aluminium foil and cotton pieces. Then try to remove the varnish using the cuticle pusher. If that doesn’t work, it’s because your nail polish is hanging securely. Then put your cotton on your nails for a few more minutes.
  4. Once the polish is removed, use your polishing block on each of your nails to remove any residue.
  5. Finish with a nail treatment because depending on their health, this whole process could damage them.
