Can you please give us a quick intro about yourself?
Hi, my name is Martha and I have been working as a qualified beautician for more than 15 years. I started my career in salons and I made the switch to become a mobile beautician 3 years ago and haven’t regretted it ever since. I received my Level 3 diploma in beauty therapy, my objective is to obtain the next 7 levels for advanced beauty in order to gain more skills.
Previously, I have worked in the pharmacies’ beauty section and my areas of specialty are mainly hair and beauty. When talking about beauty, this can be sometime confusing as it includes lots of different services. I am vetted to do services like waxing, manicure, artificial nails, massage, facials, makeup and so on. Another aspect of my job is giving recommendations to my customers in cream and skincare.
How long have you been working as an at-home beautician? What motivated you to start?
After numerous years in salons, I decided to take the leap into self-employed work, and I became an at-home beautician three years ago. It can be quite daunting at first, but you get so many benefits out of it. I think the main reason that led me to this decision, was that I wanted to create a more personal connection with my clients. In a salon, it can be complicated to create this feeling.
What do you like best in your job?
Like I said, there are so many positive things. First of all, you are your own boss – you do need to be rigorous with yourself that’s for sure – but at the end of the day you can arrange your planning however you wish, which is amazing for the work / life balance. I get to choose when I want to relax and take time for myself. The freedom is the main perk for me. Of course, meeting new people and creating a personal relationship with your loyal customers is something I love in this job. If you are not a people person, being a beautician can be tricky. When you do the job that you love, you really get a new sense of motivation.
How did you find out about Wecasa?
I found out about Wecasa online through Instagram a few months ago.
How long have you been working with Wecasa?
I joined a few months ago.
What do you like most about?
I have been working with other similar companies and what I really like about Wecasa is the freedom the partnership offers. I can freely choose my working hours and the jobs I can do. There’s no pressure in achieving a set number of sessions. You can easily feel that everybody is genuinely nice – if I’ve ever had any issues related to the app or whatsoever, the customer success team was always very helpful and nice. This is really important and makes the difference between companies doing a similar kind of service. We can feel you have a wonderful team.
Do you have any tips or good practices to share? Details clients love?
Oh yes, throughout my experience, I’ve gathered a few tips and good practices that I guess make the session move from average to wow. I think the behaviour is important, you need to understand how talkative the client wants to be. If the client is asking questions, then of course reply, but if the client is keeping it quiet, then respect it. It’s important to be able to speak to all of your clients. Those are simple tips but be nice and kind, even if the client can be difficult. The main tip would be to just be yourself, as long as the job is done properly, the client will be happy and this is the main objective. What I always try to remember is to put myself in the shoes of the customers, so I do what I would like to be done for me and I keep this thought throughout the session. If at the end, the satisfaction is not there, well I can safely say that I have done my best and this is the most important thing.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to try out at-home services for the first time?
Well, for pros who are still working full time in salon, I would say that you need to believe in yourself and in your capacity. Taking the leap can be scary but as long as you are good at what you do you will be rewarded at the end. For clients who have never tried at-home beauty service, I can only recommend them to try. The experience is enhanced as you have the beautician only for you – you are her only focus. She is dedicated to you for the entire time of the session and that person is going to take care of you in the best way possible. Also, it’s way more convenient, you get to stay at-home so you do not have to waste time in public transports. All my clients who tried at-home beauty services for the first time all loved it and told me they are not going back to salons.
Top 3 favourite products you recommend and why?
My top three favourite products at the moment are Tea tree oil, it’s a must-have. It has lots of benefits and I get a lot of feedback from customers saying they feel safer using this oil for the nail rather than normal oil because of the chemicals inside it. At the moment I love, products from the Kaeso brands for mani / pedi. I love trying out new brand and products to get my own idea of them so ask me in three months and I’ll probably have a new top three products.
What would you say are the trends for the end of the year and next year in beauty?
As part of my job, I always seek the upcoming trends in the beauty industry. I need to keep updated to offer customers what they want. Overall, the major trends are quite stable, but little new trends add-on to them. For instance, in manicure, nail art has become a thing, I think this will stay for a while, the challenge will be to keep up with what are the cool design happening at the moment. In the past month what was very popular was the French rainbow manicure as well as fine line design in clear colours. I guess that now we are approaching autumn the colours will become darker. I think French manicure will always stay in time. In terms of trends for hair, blunt cut is very trendy at the moment as well as balayage.
Any beauty hacks to keep your hair healthy
Giving recommendations to clients is a big part of my job – I love helping them out. I always adjust my recommendations to specific issues the client has. For instance, when I see clients with weak hair, the first question I ask is whether or not they take any vitamins because this is crucial to have healthy hair. My second advice for people with damaged hair is to suggest them to put once or twice a week a castor oil mixed with other oils in their hair. I have the qualifications to give out advice to any customers within the beauty industry (eg: skin issue or nail problem for instance). I know this is really appreciated by customers. With my degree and professional backgrounds, I have experience in helping out customers with their issues and I can offer solutions they are looking for and suggest the right products. The main feedback I have is that this kind of advice is very precious.
Our purpose at Wecasa is to save time for ourselves and for others. What is your time saving tip?
To be totally honest, I don’t think I am the right person to answer this question – I am the worst with time saving and I need to work and improve on it.
Do you have anything you want to add?
Not, I’ve managed to say everything I wanted to share with you – Once again, I really enjoy working with Wecasa and I am looking forward to what the future entails.
